What is “counseling or psychotherapy?”
The terms counseling and psychotherapy are very often used interchangeably. Both are the application of mental health, psychological, or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systematic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development, as well as pathology. Essentially, both are defined as a process of working with a licensed professional in the field of mental health to develop positive thinking and coping skills. Assessment of mental illness and application of diagnosis is pertinent to the development of treatment strategies, i.e. the potential need for medication, evaluation and referral recommendations to your MD.
